What the Critics Say

"A safe choice in more ways than one, the Lexus NX is even among the more affordable models in its class. It brings reliability and excellent resale values, while offering hybrid power and all-wheel drive. The Lexus dealership experience is usually quite enjoyable, as well. There are loyal Lexus buyers who won’t need swaying. As for the rest, put the NX on your list of vehicles to consider. Better still, use it as a benchmark." – Kelley Blue Book

"Cabin design takes a big leap forward in this generation of NX, with a modern look and classy materials. The NX offers one of the more spacious cabins in the luxury subcompact crossover segment, with slightly more passenger room in the rear seat and more cargo space with the rear seats folded than many of its rivals." - Car and Driver

Both the NX Hybrid and RX Hybrid are efficient, comfortable, and practical, but there are still some important differences. The RX Hybrid starts at a higher MSRP, but also comes with standard all-wheel drive, which the NX Hybrid does not, so the price difference looks bigger than it really is for anyone who wants AWD. The RX is bigger across all categories, although both provide seating for five. The RX Hybrid comes with more rear cargo space, but fold the back seats down, and the cargo capacity is almost identical, with the NX Hybrid offering a slight advantage. Both are noticeably more efficient than their conventional counterparts, but the NX, being smaller and lighter, offers the better fuel economy and performance of the two. With its superb city fuel economy and ability to better fit into tight parking spaces, the NX Hybrid is generally favored by city dwellers, while the RX Hybrid’s more spacious cabin and higher towing capacity make it ideal for those who have bigger families, have to spend more time in the vehicle, or want the perfect road trip family hauler.

Lexus NX Hybrid Efficiency

NX Hybrid MPG & Efficiency

The NX Hybrid is rated at 42 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined for FWD versions, or 41 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 39 mpg combined for AWD versions. The conventional model, when equipped with AWD, gets 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. That’s a pretty noticeable difference, and at $4 per gallon, it represents an annual fuel savings of about $1,200.

Lexus NX

Is the Lexus NX Hybrid Worth It?

The NX Hybrid is perfect for anyone looking for an efficient and maneuverable vehicle that also brings with it Lexus’s unbeatable reputation for quality, comfort, reliability, and safety. The NX Hybrid starts off more attractively priced than its competitors, but also exists in a segment with few other hybrids, making it the obvious choice for anyone efficiency-minded. In fact, the closest competitor is probably another Lexus, the RX Hybrid, which is bigger and comes with a higher towing capacity, although it obviously costs more as well.

NX Hybrid vs Competitors

It’s hard to overstate just how big of an advantage the hybrid drivetrain gives the NX Hybrid. The closest competitor in terms of price is the Acura RDX, but since Acura offers no electrification of any kind for any model, the RDX is at a huge disadvantage for efficiency. Additionally, Acura is currently in a production pause for the RDX, so if you want a new example, it’s going to be a seriously long wait. German competitors like the BMW X3 or Audi Q5 are priced higher and are notorious for nickel-and-diming buyers for every little option, meaning the price difference is even bigger than it seems. And once again, although German luxury brands offer one or two plug-in hybrid models, there are no models with conventional hybrid drivetrains, and no compact PHEV models either.
