DEPENDABILITY - LEXUS TOPS J.D. POWER U.S. VEHICLE DEPENDABILITY STUDY^SM (VDS)

Yet another key concern when considering a new vehicle is long-term dependability. While sophisticated engineering and advanced technology may catch a buyer's attention, vehicles that consistently deliver high performance and perform reliably every day often earn a spot in their garage.

Every year, the J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) measures the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles¹. In 2026, original owners of 2023 model year vehicles were asked to report their experiences. This study covers 184 specific problems grouped into 9 major vehicle categories, with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

Lexus stands at the top of the competition in terms of dependability with a score of 151 PP100. This is a full 53 problems per 100 vehicles lower than the industry average of 204 PP100, compared to the BMW score of 198 PP100, almost exactly average. Lexus is the clear winner in terms of dependability.

Lexus ES vs. BMW 5-Series

Both brands offer a midsize sedan that has been an important part of the brand for decades, and both brands also recently debuted electric versions of these sedans. So we’re going to take a look at how these newest sedan offerings compare. The Lexus ES offers between 276 and 307 miles of range, while the i5 offers between 278 and 310 miles, so we’re off to a very close start. However, things are a bit less close when we arrive at the price. In fact, just to get close to the price of the BMW we had to use the top trim of the ES for this comparison. And yet, for all the extra money - the BMW certainly doesn’t get you any more power. While the difference in horsepower ratings isn’t very much, the extra traction from an all-wheel-drive drivetrain makes a big difference with electric vehicles, and that’s why the ES goes from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds and the i5 takes 5.4 seconds despite the nearly identical peak power numbers. Despite this performance advantage, the ES is still rated by the EPA as more efficient than the i5, allowing for a smaller battery and a quicker charging time, both on a 240-volt home Level 2 charger or a public DC fast charger.

The ES is a bit bigger than the i5, offering more trunk space and more legroom, especially rear legroom. But it should be noted that the ES has a tighter turning radius by more than a foot, despite the larger size, so there’s no compromise involved in getting that more spacious interior- just better engineering. And while you might expect the pricier i5 to come better-equipped, that’s not the case. BMW never misses a chance to nickel-and-dime its customers, and features like leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and a 360-view camera are all optional extras. And even in the areas where BMW puts in some extra effort, like the premium branded stereo system, it still doesn’t quite measure up to what you get from the Lexus. And lastly, a big reason why we picked these models for the comparison is the opportunity to show that Lexus warranty coverage for electric vehicle batteries is far superior to what BMW offers, on top of the also-superior drivetrain warranty coverage.
